Find LibraryThing a Maine employee, get $1,000 in books

That's right. Find us a Maine—or anyway within an hour of Portland, ME—employee and we'll give you $1,000 in books.

We did this once before. It's how we found John, our Systems Adminitrator. (John found himself, so he got his own $1,000.)

Jobs. We have three potential jobs to fill.
  • Hacker. We're looking for PHP hacker. JavaScript genius and library-data experience. We hope we get two of those.
  • Graphic designer/user-experience guru. Experience designing for data-rich sites like LibraryThing a must.
  • Brainy, overworked assistant. Smart, flexible, organized, relentless—willing to do both high-level (strategic analysis) and low-level (send-out-these-CueCats) work. The job is non-technical, but you need to be super-comfortable around computers.
Rules! You get a $1,000 gift certificate to Abebooks, Amazon, Booksense or the independent bookseller of your choice. (Longfellow Books? Books Etc.?) You can split it between them. You don't need to buy books with it (but why do that?).

To qualify, you need to connect us to someone. Either you introduce them to us—and they follow up with a resume and etc.—or they mention your name in their email ("So-and-so told me about LibraryThing"). You can recommend yourself, but if you found out about it on someone's blog, we hope you'll do the right thing and make them the beneficiary.

Contact Tim Spalding (tim@librarything.com) for more information, or to send a resume.

Small print: Our decision is final, incontestable, irreversible and completely dictatorial. It only applies when an employee is hired full-time, not part-time, contract or for a trial period. If we don't hire someone for the job, we don't pay. The contact must happen in the next month. Void where prohibited. You pay taxes, and the insidious hidden tax of shelving.

Needless to say, we'll throw in a free lifetime membership, so you can catalog your loot. And you'll get the satisfaction you helped LibraryThing become everything it could be.

Kudos. This blog post samples CreativeCommons Attribution-Share-Alike images from Flickr users boredcollegekid, GoCardUSA, SundayKofax, DBKing (Longfellow statue in DC, not Portland, alas), Man_Pikin and RyanInc.

Brainy, overworked assistant

You just had to be in Maine instead of Minnesota, didn't you? This would be right up my alley.

Le sigh.

Well, send me a resume?

The assistant position is the one I'm *least* flexible about, but still, I'd be glad to hear from you.

OH, man, the others beat me to it, but ditto for me -- I almost moved to Freeport in 1976, and now I'm SO ready for Maine and that hjob! Doesn't help you, I know, just venting, but best wishes! (By the way, someone today on the soccer field, knowing I "like books" and am a "reader" said, "Oh, do you know Shelfari?" and I said something like "Bah$$655#!! You must mean LIBRARYTHING!

Don't you need an assistant in North Carolina? I love you, Tim, and LibraryThing, but my grandbaby is here and I'm not leaving him. I get to reread all my favorite children's books with him!

Besides, I don't do snow.

I used to live in Maine, but now I work in a library down in Boston. I should contact my brother and see if his girlfriend is interested in the brainy overworked assistant kind of job (I'm pretty sure she is not hacker++ or graphics++).

Tim,

I do live in Maine, born here, raised here and still living here. I have returned to college twice and a confirmed bibliophile. Currently Tim, we are losing the war, I graduated in the Spring and haven't found gainful employment as of yet.

So, take me, take me!!!

Everybody is so much closer to Maine - I am in southern Illinois. I would love this job. As a retired schoolteacher and disabled, I can't move, but I read all the time and I do have a MS degree in Instructional Technology. Some of us could probably really help you from home! Just a thought ~ Reading all these posts is like a good novel, we can relate.

Can the brainy overworked assistant work from home in another state? That describes my current job exactly, and LibraryThing would be so much fun. Plus $1,000 dollars in books! That's the best bonus ever!

Can you post some more details about the assistant position? Such as pay range, requirements, etc.? I am in Ohio (where I'm already an overworked assistant) but I would move if I found something great.

Ooooooh.....I live an hour from Portland, just over the border in NH! I'm a nurse, though. I did design my own website about 10 years ago...I have an eye for layout and was the editor-in-chief of my HS yearbook. If you need someone three days a week who can do some work from home maybe I can help. I'm willing to learn on the job! (and I have a Mac)

I think the assistant position needs to be local and work-from-office (a nice retrojected term, like paper mail). The others I'm more flexible about, although the person would need to be able to visit once a week, minimum.

Oh dear god, I'd kill for the brainy assistant position. I'm a French lit major and poised and ready to graduate in t-minus less than two months from UT, after which I'll be footloose, fancy-free, and...in desperate need of a job.

Also, I'm relentless.

Why oh why isn't LibraryThing located in Texas??

I'm so glad LibraryThing is hiring! We don't have very many companies like LibraryThing located in Maine. I'm glad I finally have a chance to put all my programming knowledge into something like this.

I sent in my resume and what not. Hope to hear from you soon! It seems selfish to nominate myself, but who can pass up $1,000 of books?

Please keep posting your job opportunities. I'm looking to relocate in a couple of years and am a top-notch Admin. Assistant looking to do something different in a city where the cost of living is substantially lower than San Diego (love love love books - I'd live in a bookstore if I could).

Just like Tonya, I am also a top-notch administrative assistant. I've a great legal background, I'm a novelist-wannabe, writing is in my family, as are books and bookstores. I just relocated to Southern California and wish I could come to Maine and work for LibraryThing!

Big sigh.

Hi Tim,

I saw your presentation last month at the AAP's Intro to Publishing conference, and thought it was one of the more interesting presentations - I have been really enjoying LibraryThing since then.

I am a Maine native, and so was excited to see this position. I mentioned it to Jessica Gilpatrick who still lives in Maine, and who is very interested. I think she sent a resume. Good luck, Jess! Hopefully, she mentioned my name and I can score lots of books...

Any updates on the assistant position? Salary, and such? I'm nearly finished with a degree in history, and another in English. Maine has been a dream of my for years, and for this job, I'd move from Detroit (bah, failing economy, anyway).

I'll email for more info, I suppose!

forget the fact that maine lies just under the artic circle, and that natives there talk funny, I'll stay in florida or georgia and be a really joyful subsciber to the service, as it takes an average of a half hour a day of my time. Besides, except for Tim, y'all seem to have a "Thing" about people older than 40 working there. Or am I mistaken?
