Redesign update

A week ago, I invited LibraryThing members to redesign the site, opening up LibraryThing Zen Garden, a place to design and test new stylesheets for the site.

So far, some two dozen members have contributed CSS stylesheets and one, zanix, produced a highly original design, executed entirely in Photoshop. MarkBarnes, acting on a suggestion from Abby, produced a very attractive design, based on the design of Cork'd, "LibraryThing for wine." All told, there have been some really interesting ideas, and fetching new color palates. I'm still not sure where to take the design, but it's given me a lot to think about. (It's certainly poointed out some structural problems with our mark-up too.)

Check out the designs here and the group Redesign LibraryThing! where they are being discussed. Here are some samples:

You know, I'm going to be stubborn about this: I put the Thingamabrarian in my version of the new header. and I think he needs at least a nod. Tim. He's looking at you.

Here's the link, again:

Perhaps I'm missing it, but you mention zanix produced a highly original design. I don't see an easy way to look at just his design. There's no link to it that I can see in the post and I don't notice on the template pate any indication of who did what.

What are those first couple of images called (and are they even available to use)?

They're lovely!

I also like the first two screen shots -- are they the designs by zanix?

The Cork'd style design (in the fourth image, right?) looks great in the screen shot here, but it gets totally messed up by IE7.

I agree -- the first two are particularly lovely (as is the second down on the right). The only thing is that the second one makes it look as if the website is called UbraryThing, since the L and the I are connected.

To those commenting about zanix's designs (the first two) - as mentioned in the post, they were done purely in Photoshop (mock-ups), they're not actual CSS edits of the site so they're not available in the CSS Zen Garden.

Agreed, would love to see LT looking something like either of those first 2 shots!
