New JSON API

I've just blogged about a new Javascript/JSON API for work info over on Thingology, LibraryThing's blog for ideas, issues, libraries and labs.

It's mostly designed to make it easy for people to link to LibraryThing only when we have the book. You can also dress up the link with copy- and review-counts, and an average rating.

I think regular members will be more excited by a JSON API to your own books. This will allow us and members to write new widgets—widget for reviews, for example—and better widgets. I'm want to write them so that all the JavaScript code that comes out it is automatically shared between members, both legally and technically.

The work-info API is a first step. Let's talk about this and what should come.

Knowing nothing about this javascript thingy, can the results be incorporated in WikiThing pages?

What I'm after in the long run is to be able to pull title and author given an LT work number.

Tim,

I'm really excited about this API--especially the member-specific stuff coming soon (I hope!). Count me in as an early user of it; I'd love to build widgets to work with user-specific data like reviews and library info and ratings! Whee.

I'm very happy you're considering doing this and look forward to seeing what you end up doing with it. I contacted you a few months ago looking for just such a thing. LibraryThing, via its CVS export, provided the data that went into constructing the JSON for MPOW's Focus the Nation online book exhibit.

How much easier it would be to pull the data directly from your site.
