LibraryThing Authors Opens Up

We're opening up and relaunching our LibraryThing Authors program—our way to connect authors to their fans.

Before, we required authors to have at least 50 books cataloged before joining LibraryThing Authors, and some 800 authors have done so. But some authors wanted to start right away or were more interested in reaching out—talking to members and listing their events—than cataloging their library. So we're dropping the 50 books requirement. Visit LibraryThing Authors for directions on joining.

There's more for authors to do on LibraryThing—now more than ever:
  • Add your readings and other events to LibraryThing Local. Events now appear on author pages too (eg., Sarah Monette, Megan Abott, James Dashner and Elizabeth Bear).
  • Add your photo to your author profile.
  • Connect with readers on a more personal level, in groups and on-on-one.
  • Showcase your favorite books on your catalog.
  • Add your home page, interviews and other links to your author page.
  • Dress up your "Common Knowledge" section with where you went to school, your agent, where you're buried, etc.
  • Get your publisher to put one of your books up for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. Or pick up a free book yourself. (Or wait a few weeks—we're going to open that up to authors too.)
In the next few week's we'll be unveiling a new "Author Chat" section on Talk, where authors can engage readers directly.

There are angel spirits stuck in magnetic cages in 12 countries underground Air Force bases. They have evil alien technology from space, it keeps a captured angel in a prison for years. These wicked people are self decieved calling angels demons. Make it a Law that they can only have 2 'demon' traps per nation. And a Law that they cant try to do harm to the prisoners. When are they going to stop lying about this, when they put angel traps along all the sidewalks? I hope they dont chase angels with starfighters in outer space in the future.

This was a long overdue feature. I'm glad it's here, particularly after listening to the NPR broadcast.

Congrats on the NPR plug today, by the way.

OK you know your blog has reached critical mass when your comments range into the truly wonky . . . (AKA please don't delete the "angel traps").

And um you should have a post linking to the NPR story when it's available online! For sure.

I emailed a request to be listed as an LT Author a couple of weeks ago but didn't receive a response. Should I try again?

LibraryThing,

I could not figure out how to leave my feedback elsewhere. I just logged on and found out that I am not able to add any more books as I have reached the "free limit" of 200 books. To enter more, I must subscribe for a yearly fee (probably auto renews unless I go and explicitly opt-out).

Unfortunately for you, I was not informed about the "free for the first 200 books" limit prior to my spending hours and hours entering the 211 books I could recall off the top of my head I had read. Perhaps your warning was "hidden" or intentionally non-obvious. For me, that is the same as not being informed. For you it is the same effect, I am departing your service.

I have absolutely no intention of paying you for the priviledge of my updating my own list of books. Are you freakin INSANE?! Good luck with your model (ROTFLMAO - still living in the 1990's with your charging models, I can see).

Just to be clear, I have deleted all of my books and intend for my account to go dormant.

Thank you for the great idea. I am saddened you chose to charge the $10 a month. I don't think I am the only client who feels this way. I am just one in a hundred that is vocal about my choice.

Jim

For a response to that comment, posted on ten blog posts, despite the fact that ever team member's email is posted on the blog and there are whole groups devoted to feedback, see http://www.librarything.com/blog/2008/03/all-things-considered-does-librarything.php .

Perhaps this actually exists somewhere and I am simply not aware of it, but it would be a great feature if it would tell you somewhere on your profile if any of the authors in your catalog where a LibraryThing Author.
Keep up the great work!

Oops. That should read 'were' of course and not 'where'. Not sure why I am too lazy to proofread before I hit publish, but not after.
