SantaThing about to close!

UPDATE: SantaThing is closed, and the Santa-ees have been picked. Check the SantaThing page to see who you've got, and start picking out books!

You have until noon, Eastern Standard Time (17:00 GMT) to sign up for SantaThing, Secret Santa for LibraryThing members. If you want to be part of it, sign up now! (If you want to know more about it, see the previous blog post.)

As of now there are 235 Santas. That's a lot of participation!

Once we've closed it down, we're going to throw everyone in a hat and pick the Santa-ees (Santa recipients?). We're going to need to take some time to make sure all the entrants qualify—some non-US/UK/Canada people will have to be tossed—and have given us an address. We hope to turn it around quickly.

Once we've picked people, we'll post comments on member's profiles. Users who have comment-emailing on will get it by email too, but we can't guarantee it doesn't end up in your spam box.

You will have until 10pm Friday (Dec. 14) night to select the book or books. We'll process things in the order they come in, as fast as Abby and I can handle it.

Damn you Tim, for adding the feature where people make suggestions. I hadn't been planning on participating, but then I went through and made a few suggestions, and I hooked. And now I've wasted the morning looking at people's requests and thinking about what I'd give them if I'm assigned to them.

Great idea! I came late, but still a great idea: Getting books, and helping LT a bit (I think). :-)

Are we going to get notified of where (US/UK/Canada) our Santa-ee lives, so that we can make sure the relevant Amazon has the books we pick?

I'm so excited about this!!

One quick question, though: Is there a way to search for an LT member's posts in 'Talk'? I can see what groups my Santee is in, but searching for specific posts to get a better idea of his/her taste would be great.

No, unfortunately. We've discussed it before, but I think it could be used creepily. It would be useful here, though, I agree.

Great fun! Quick question--can we buy from the associated sellers on Amazon (i.e. for used or out-of-print books), or can we only go through Amazon itself?

how do we let you know what we picked for our giftee? i have an isbn ready to go but I can't find any info on how we submit our selections. I probably just missed something obvious but any help would be appreciated! :-) thanks!

How do we submit our requests?

Also for amazon.co.uk - what exchange rate do we use? Am I right in presuming that we only have £10 to spend on them as it's about $2 to £1?

I second Caroline's question about the exchange rate. According to xe.com, 20 USD = 9.79 GBP. So is that what I should spend?

The actual execution of this SantaThing is very confusing but I LOVE it and hope you do it every year. I hope I picked correctly for my recipient.

Hi y'all...yeah, it's kinda confusing but here's how it seems to work. If you log in and then go to http://www.librarything.com/santathing.php, you should see the member's name underneath You are choosing the gift for: Click that member's name and you should see the page letting you know that YOU are the SantaThing with all the directions. Hope that eases some of the confusion...ooh this is exciting.

That was fun! I was well-equipped to choose for my Sant-ee, to the point where I had too many ideas to select from. I can't wait to get my own package :)

Er, that anonymouse was me. I missed the part where I could put in a nickname. It's been a long day...

Wow, this has been fun, and just as much fun to make suggestions on other people's Santas as to pick the book for mine. Hooray!

I really enjoyed this. And since my family and friends have all agreed not to exchange gifts this year (too much stuff, clutter, etc.), this will be one of my few Christmas presents, one I can use and enjoy! Will we get a chance to thank our Santas? Will we find out who our Santa is and what recommendations LTer's made for us? Right now, we aren't allowed to look at our entry. Will that be restored after Christmas? Thanks for the fun of this.

I'm one of the thwarted peekers. :D It will certainly be a fun surprise to see which books I receive. What a festive way to celebrate the holiday season and share this spirit with our fellow Thingamabrarians!

Thanks, Tim and Abby, for going to all the trouble to do this.

This was totally fun! Thanks for putting it together. If I may make a suggestion for next year (should you wish to do it), it would have been helpful to have $21 dollars to play with since a large number of Amazon trade paperbacks sell for $10 and a little bit. With $21, a Santa could provide 2 trade paperbacks.

Concur on the amount. I found a workaround (a book I suspect my Santathingee will like is available as a trade paperback) but you've now got close to a year to finesse the small details.

I hope I got it right. I didn't get a confirmation or error message.

My package from Amazon arrived today- Dec. 24. I was very good and had my son put it under the tree unopened. It has been fun - I hope everyone gets a pleasant surprise.

I got my package on December 24th as promised. It was fun to come home from the late shift at work and see what my Secret Santa had picked for me.

Thank you Tim and Abby! I hope it wasn't too much trouble and you both are up to doing this again next year.
