National Book Festival

Anyone in or around DC this weekend should head to the National Mall for the National Book Festival.* The festival will be held, rain or shine, on the National Mall between 7th and 14th Streets from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, September 29.

Seventy authors will be on the Washington Mall, giving readings, signing books, meeting with festival goers. We've highlighted each of these authors here on LibraryThing, with a special NBF button (see, for example, Jodi Picoult). You can see the entire list of authors here, on The National Book Festival's authors page.

They just added interviews with some of the authors; podcasts can be found under National Book Festival Podcasts. I've also gone through and added links to each of these on the respective author pages. Enjoy!

LT Group
There's even a group on LibraryThing dedicated to the event (National Book Festival group). Join in to talk about the authors, RSVP for the meet-up, and more.

Meet-up
LT members have organized a meet-up (thanks SqueakyChu!): The National Museum of Natural History, base of the front stairs, far right hand side when facing the building. 2pm. Be there or be square. (Details in this talk post).

*The festival is sponsored by the Library of Congress and hosted by Laura Bush.

Since I am from Baltimore I feel as if I should also point out that the much lesser know Baltimore Book Festival starts tomorrow and runs through the weekend.

So if anyone wants to hop on over then I'll see you there.

Does Baltimore usually hold it's book festival during the National Book Festival? Talk about city rivalry.

This is fantastic. Will any of the LT staff be there?

Oh, and I haven't seen you all mention Banned Books Week at all yet... it starts on Sunday. What are you doing for it?

This is the 12th year for the Baltimore Book Festival and I really don't know if it was planned to coincide, compete or what.

There is going to be an ecletic mix of authors there. From Master P to Tim Gunn. The odd thing is that the Baltimore contingent of authors just isnt there. Like David Simon, Jack Bludis, Laura Lippman, Anne Tyler, Frank Deford and a lot of others.

But I did want to at least mention it because Baltimore sometimes is the forgotten east coast city living in the shadows of New York, Philly and DC.

I created a Book Festivals page on the wiki. Any chance of incorporating it somewhere as a subset of the Main Page? I think people like it because I'm already getting active contributions. I also created a slot where people can plan to meet at these events!

Very cool, SqueakyChu. I moved it to the main page of WikiThing, under Fun.

Thanks, Abby. I just wanted the official "okay" before I moved it there.

I'm really tempted to catch a train down to see it—maybe give out LibraryThing flyers. But I think I won't. My wife is leaving for the weekend and that means I'll be able to get a ton of concentrated programming done.

Are there flyers I can print out? I'll be meeting a friend with a Bookcrossing wagon of free books to give out, and there's no reason why I can't advertise LT at the same time as well.

Actually, the Baltimore Book Festival has always been held the last weekend in September. The National Book Festival decided to hold their festival the same weekend when it was established a few years ago. So the National Book Festival took advantage of the foundation that BBF made for that weekend. Instead of being a detriment, Baltimore has found that many people come to both festivals as the Baltimore festival runs for three days and the National Festival for only one day. Most who go to both say the Baltimore Book Festival is much better.
