What's happening now?

I've added some spice to the home page—a section showing the books added recently. It updates every five seconds. The "last five minutes" section can go above 600. This one was taken during a slow patch.* But, hey—two Harry Potters!

It's an experiment to see if being more up-front about the size and dynamism of the site will draw more users in. As one user ably described it, LibraryThing's home page looks about the same now as it did twelve months ago. See more discussion of the experiment here. Whether it stays on the home page, we're going to playing with features like this.

Tomorrow: Tags grow up.

*Saturday night is our nadir. And this weekend is for reading Harry Potter, not playing with LibraryThing. I note, for example that the Hogwarts Express group, one of our most active, has gone from near hysteria to eerie quiet!

domcoin Tu as raison c'est vraiment super, ca m'a beaucoup plu!! Tim, I am so enjoying LT and the window it is opening into the wider reading world. Despite being from across the pond I love being a member - thank you! In fact I am off on a jorney across a much smaller pond to France for my hols. We go computer free as it is too great a temptation to do work!! However I will really miss LT. All is not lost I am taking my books naturally, stickits, my journal, Parker 51 fountain pen and purple ink!! Keep up the good work!! Julie

Great idea, Tim! I'll probably find my way to this feed on coffee breaks just to be mesmerized.

This new feature is hypnotic and darts the mind from one title to another........could be addictive!

Tim - No I am afraid you did not hit a french blog - you underestimate the world wide extent of LT!! I am English, into French and was merely replying to domcom in french as I am pretty fluent and am a francophile! I got into LT via a contribution on BBC Radio 4 reading magazine radio programme I heard in the car. Got home looked up the url and here I am! I find it fascinating the similarities and the differences between the American/Anglo books 'of the moment'. Julie

Hi!

Great idea!

Would it be possible to reload it a bit less frequently? With the current settings it's hard to read the list.

I think that the "how many books have been put on every five minutes shows how big librarything realy is

Tim - I like the new list, it DOES jazz things up (though I'm a new user, so didn't know the page was due for an upgrade). But I agree with hermund's comment; any way you could make it eight or ten seconds, please? They fly by so quickly, and when I see something of interest, I try to see the name of the user who added it, and then the whole thing is scrolling away or completely disappeared.

Thanks for asking for our input & feedback!

Love this new feature! It really does spice up the front page a lot! And it's awesome being able to see what people are adding, in real time. Good job!!! :)

PS I second the motion for a Facebook app.

There are 1440 five-minute slices in a day. Someone's bound to analyze HRN's traffic volume by time zone, etc.!

How about letting us filter this as a widget available in our profiles? I would love to be able to see every sf book added ...

also, how about adding reviews and talks?
