Cooking book pile contest

Our newest book pile contest theme is cooking.* For something new, we're teaming with Abebooks. They're co-sponsoring the contest, and offering a fantastic grand prize—$100 to use on AbeBooks.com. See their announcement of the contest here.

Without further ado...

The rules
1. Take a photo of your books. Be creative and inspired! Remember, the theme is cooking.
2. Post the photo to Flickr. You'll need a Flickr account to do this (it's easy and free).
3. Tag your photo on Flickr with "LibraryThingAbeBooks"

The prizes
First prize—$100 to use on AbeBooks.com
Second prize—Free lifetime membership on LibraryThing

The deadline
May 15, 2007

Special note on Flickr—photos from new accounts don't always show up on the global tag page right away. If your photo isn’t showing up here, you can always post the URL in the comments to this blog post, we’ll make sure to find it.

Need inspiration? Check out the book pile archive for past winners, or Abebooks' new "Books for Cooks" section.

*Maybe it's that my recent move unearthed all the fancy but long-forgotten kitchen tools, or maybe it's that I just read Julie and Julia,** but I’m in the mood to cook lately.
**The book that introduced me to the concept of aspics. Never have I been more glad to be a vegetarian...

Er... what's with the contest rules on abebooks.com?

They're much more restrictive than normal (or than this post implies) and they also contradict themselves. I appreciate abebooks wants to cover itself and be all professional about it, but it loses some of its charm.

Contradictory:

Rules 13 and 15 say it's a random draw. 16 says winner is "chosen". This blog says it's judged.

Weird:

The person picked as winner also has to "correctly [answer], unaided by any other person, computer or calculator, mathematical, skill-testing question administered via e-mail"

Restrictive:
One entry per person. Must be a US or Canadian resident (excluding US territories or Quebec!). Must get parent/guardian's consent if under 19 in Canada or 21 in US.

The residency requirement seems particularly mean to me as I don't pass that test of worthiness! :/

Ek! I hadn't seen their contest rules page - I think it might just be a copy/paste of their standard ones. I'm talking to them right away, so thanks!

I was thinking of giving this one a shot -- goodness knows I have enough cookbooks -- but good grief ! ! !

Talk about taking the fun out of it!

And why is it limited to one entry per person? Even though I only entered one entry in the spring contest, I thought that the multiple entries by others were interesting -- variations on a theme. It's not as if there's been a huge number of entries in the contests.

I'll wait to see what happens after Abby talks to them.

Abebooks is a Canadian company, right? That explains gemmation's "weird" complaint. It's basically just Canadian boilerplate to get around legal problems of games of chance. Basically, you have to answer a skill-testing question, which is entirely pro forma, like six times 8 or something.

I totally thing we should have an actual skill component. You won; please send videotape of you balancing an egg on your nose.

oh man... I can't enter. since I'm not a US nor Canadian :(

You *can* enter even though you're not US or Canadian. Abebooks is modifying the rules page, now that we brought it to their attention. So sorry about this, but thank you all for noticing so quickly!

We do still kind of want VHS tapes sent to us of people balancing eggs on their noses though... Or maybe egg-in-spoon-in-mouth relay races? Hm...

We should have a contest to determine the game of skill part.

Since Abby's going to Australia, I propose it involve kangaroos, wombats or echidnas. This will give our Australian friends an edge, I suppose.

The one thing I want to know is:

Will the entries be judged, or will the winner be selected by random draw?

As Gemmation pointed out, abebooks' rules say both.

If it's not a judged contest, what's the point?

4/13/2007 8:01 AM
Blogger Tim said...

Judged, certainly. I'm sure Abe won't mind that.

They may want to keep some of the legal stuff in in order to protect against being sued by someone who tripped over a rhododendron while taking a book pile. (Then again, maybe that could be the game of skill requirement. No tripping.)

Maybe we could balance an echidna on our nose, while dodging a rhododendron, :-}

(Sorry, couldn't resist the visual image)

Well, being monotremes, we could balance echidna eggs on our noses.

Ok, Abe's contest rules have been revised.

To sum up:
*Only residents of US and Canada are eligible to actually win the contest (entries are welcomed from any and everywhere, and if we here at LT love it, we'll send you gift membership). It's one of their rules about awarding prizes we couldn't get around.

*It's a judged contest, not a random draw.

*You can enter as many photos as you'd like.

*The skill-testing question remains. personally, I'm hoping it involves rhinos, not wombats...

Any other questions?

As far as the "winning" goes. I guess that means we're not obligated to let you enter, and you can't sue us if you don't win, but we promise in a non-legal and entirely non-suable way that if we like it, we'll send you a gift membership.

Do the residents of Puerto Rico have to move to Quebec?

precisely.

While I'm sympathetic to the hassles faced by anyone trying to comply with "contest" legislation (which always seems to differ within countries, let alone across national borders) it's really disappointing to see that only US/Canadian residents can win this contest. Winning isn't everything, sure, but it's nice to be able to at least try.

Librarything seems to have made a concerted effort to accommodate members from other countries since its inception, which - for me - has always been one of its more appealing features.

I hope that LT and Abebooks can work together to find a way to award future prizes based on merit rather than nationality.

That said, as citizen of a country whose residents are known to eat both of the animals on our coat of arms, there's no way I'd miss entering this contest! ;)

I'm sure it's just difficult legally for Abebooks to award prizes in non-US & Canada countries -- most contests only allow entrants from the country in which they're based. I know in the past LT itself has given gift certificates as prizes; might it be legal if Abebooks donated the gift certificate to LT for the sepcific purpose of awarding as a prize, while themselves not participating in the contest except as an advertiser? I'm not a lawyer, but that seems like a possible way around.

And in the meantime, how do we guarantee that we *are* US/Canada residents if we are such?

Got a passport? Send it in!

I wonder if future contests can be rebranded as "larks" or something. You know, we might give our some memberships, or we might not. We might give them to people we like, or to our relatives. Of course, we'd behave like it's a real contest.

Yeah, it seems like this contest has had to become way too serious.

It seems to me, that in cases where there is something physical to be shipped (such as the book when a winner cashes in a gift certificate), the mailing address should give away the location of the winner. (Yes, I know that there's ways around that, but not without a lot of hassle).

In many cases, our IP address gives away our location (I know that mine does), so if the winner was given a certain page to visit to leave their IP address, it could prove that they were entitled to win.

It also seems that given the fact that LibraryThing has multilingual capabilities, and in theory should want to be promoting that, it seems unfair that so much of the world is cut off from participating in the contest. (This is all in theory to me, when it comes to this contest, I'm geographically lucky)

It's called "LT cookbooks".

Well that is seriously disappointing...I spent alot of time on this bookpile picture and I'm not a U.S. or Canadian resident. And I already have a lifetime membership. Anyhow, flickr won't even have my account open to the public by then but here's the URL just for the heck of it.

my LT user name is jenknox

Is there some other book store that will allow everyone to enter and have a shot at some free books?
Thanks!
