More Mosaics

"You are what you read" has turned into a bit of a mini-meme, with Chuck Close-style book cover portraits popping up all over. In addition to David Louis Edelman's post that started it all, we have Geoff Coupe's, followed by two excellent blog posts.

Mark Edon (that's him at right) posted a Mac-oriented tutorial, including a very useful method for using Safari to quickly download all the images from the "All Your Covers" page.

4:14 has posted an extensive PC-oriented tutorial, replete with screenshots, which also gives guidance on grabbing images, as well as AndreaMosaic tips. And in a new twist, it goes all postmodern by using book covers to make a mosaic of... a book cover.

We love these things. Send in more, and we'll start a gallery.

Not to be a party pooper, but the photo mosaic software you're using may be violating a patent:

http://www.google.com/patents?vid=USPAT6137498&id=lzEGAAAAEBAJ&dq=6,137,498

I just know this because I was trying to find a mosaic plugin for the GIMP. There was one, but the author stopped distributing it after receiving a stern lawyerly warning:

http://www.kirchgessner.net/photo-mosaic.html

And the author of AndreaMosaic clearly hasn't licensed the "technology":

Perhaps a subject for Thingology?

Well, I guess that puts the final kabosh on any thoughts of us making a server-based photo mosaic system. If it turns out AndreaMosaic et al are in violation of that patent, I wonder, should we pull the links to them?

Yeah, we're not pulling it. Asserting and being granted a patent is not the same thing as it standing up in court. And linking to something which somebody asserts in a letter to someone else violates a patent is not the same thing as violating a patent.

We've made one. How fun! I've posted it to my (generally moribund these days) blog http://moloney.blogspot.com

MacOSaiX doesn't work for me--after it downloads it says it's "preparing to mount disk image" for a while, and then I get the message "mounting failed". Anyone else have this problem? Are there other mosaic programs for OS X?

I just did one from one of my daughters drawings of a flower... Legal or not, that is a cool little app. Thanks.
