Milestones and Burgers

LibraryThing hit 4 million books this week—that's over a million in less than two months, and yesterday 42,000 more. We also topped 100,000 user contributed covers and 1 million unique books. We're growing like crazy over here. And thanks to the new servers, the Zeitgeist is even updating regularly!

To celebrate (ok, we were planning it anyway) we're having the first annual LibraryThing barbecue/picnic here in Portland, ME. You all are cordially invited - plan your vacations accordingly (Portland does have an airport, you can fly in just for the occasion).

We'll have burgers and other things to grill (vegetarian stuff too, since Abby-the-vegetarian has a say) and potato salad and chips and whatever else you're supposed to have at a barbecue. And you can meet me, and Tim, and our families - that right there should be incentive enough. Bring your babies and dogs, and we'll see you in August!

Saturday August 5th, around 5pm
28 Atlantic Street, Portland Maine

You can RSVP (email Abby) or just stop by! Email for directions or questions or food requests.

mmm mm...sounds good! Wish I could get there! :)

I just want to say, I LOVE this search all fields tool. I'm having so much fun with it! I like being able to search for a tag as well as a word in my comments section - at the same time. So, I can find all my works tagged "violin" that have the song "Johnny comes marching home"...that's just COOL.

thanks. :D

Thanks for the invitation but like many of your overseas "librarians" I'll find it a bit difficult to get there this year; however I hope you have a great time. You might consider bringing the team to London sometime for an awayday at some time to allow your UK fan club to meet up!

When I next visit Portland I'll make a point of dropping by as I feel I've got to know you all in the short time I've been a member; you've established a very successful web site which I wish we could replicate in our business.

Good luck and thanks for all you're doing to help those of us with this particular form of OCD.

Congrats on hitting 4 million. Civilization has come a long way: from barbaric "book burnings" to a happy LibraryThing barbecue celebrating the growth of a virtual world-wide library.

Oh, I would drop by if I could, but I can't :( If it was out here in Southern California I probably could make it.

Maybe we should have LT picnics in different areas of the country.

Rats, rats, rats. We are far too close (within a mile or so) but are going to have to miss it. I have just checked with She Who Must Be Obeyed and am told that we are going to be up in Tenants Harbor with my family that weekend (and to work on our schoolhouse restoration project (which, for a literary hook, is the one Sarah Orne Jewett used while writing Country of the Pointed Firs). We are al very sorry to miss this event. We will have a barbecue later in the month that you and Tim can miss *laughing*. I hope you have a great time and look forward to meeting soon.

very best,
ijk

Think of all of us who won't be able to make it to the barbecue - and have a wonderful time. I second (or third) the request for pictures - and a rotating schedule of LT meets/feasts!

Come to the Gulf Coast in March, and I bet enough of us can be wrangled together from nearby states to provide (or attend) a proper crawfish boil. (With plenty of alternatives for Abby. :) ) We might even supply sweet potato-pecan pie or sweet potato AND (bourbon-laced) pecan pies... or... anything to tempt you.

Sometime, we've gotta be able to flaunt our LT duds (shirts, caps, APRONS) to appreciative audiences! (- But no thongs showing, PLEASE!) ;) Anyway, it's great you're throwing a party, wonderful to be invited, and perhaps even better that so many of us would LIKE to be there - whether we can or no - beyond the faces you'll see.

the picnic party sounds wonderful. But, like Jared B. I am in southern California. I second his idea: Have multiple gatherings!!

Eurydice: Where on the Gulf Coast are you? Christopher's in Alabama--near Mobile? I might go down there some time, for example when Maine is knee-deep in snow.

Tim, if you're taking suggestions for LT Gatherings, let me just say a few words: Phoenix. January. 75 degrees and sunny.

Actually, if it goes well, we were thinking of doing one in Cambridge, MA--the family estate.
