Picture upload

I've added the ability to upload profile pictures, not just link to one somewhere else. Go to your profile and click "Edit your profile" to do this.

If this works reasonably well, I'll also let people upload book covers. This will be restricted to paid users to avoid porn spam. (Also added to the terms.)

Tim,

Would this mean that someone could upload what purports to be a picture of the cover of a book we share and it would show up on my entry?

I'd be very cautious before introducing that. It's one thing to trust data from a library or Amazon. It's another thing to trust data imported by users.

It's amazing what people will find funny.

well, it would certainly save some storage space if you made the pictures uploaded by users available to other users. 100 people uploading the same image seems somewhat silly. maybe add an extra tab with available bookcovers for that title, from both amazon and other users. and then even unpaid users could take advantage of the extra bookcovers (just not be able to submit their own).

and let me just add a big thank you for putting in the "other authors" field. that is greatly appreciated!

Uploading doesn't seem to work - it replaces my URL with '/userpics/[my name].jpg' but doesn't seem to have actually referenced the relevant file at all, let alone uploaded it, I just wind up with a blank space where my pic was. I'll continue hosting it myself for now!

The image thing works great for me.

I like the idea of being able to upload our own book covers... I did that for many of my out of print books in Delicious Library, so I even have several hundred that I'm ready to bring over!

I'm adding the import feature today. I actually switched gears. After playing around with all the different file formats, which use different fields than LT and each other, I have decided just to parse all the ISBNs in a file and throw out the rest. The ISBNs will then be re-fetched from LT, Amazon, the LC or etc.

I think that'll make 90% of users 90% happy. This is better than making the users of one application really happy, then later another and etc. Plus it simplifies the programming a lot, which means fewer bugs.

I'll announce it when I announce it, but if anyone wants to comment, please do.

Thanks Tim for the new feature, to be able to upload book covers. I have half of my books in Spanish and there are no covers available through the LT automatic adding system.

You could add as feature the possibility to search for uploaded covers of other users, under same book title, to be able to get it for one's book, as an option. That way we could choose between uploading a cover or choose another already in LT from another user (if the book title is same).

Also, to prevent misuse of this feature, images could receive a flag from any user, for you to review if some image is not a book cover.

Someone please explain how to upload book covers and how to associate it with one's books.

I have no idea how-to.

Thanks

No way to upload covers at present. I wanted to test it out with uploading profile images and, yes, there were some problems. I'll move to adding the book covers soon.

Oh, once you work it out, that will seriously be cool. There's so much great cover art back through the years. There should be a way of sharing this with all users. Fascinating!

About the import feature: What happens if one of the ISBNs is not found? Will it be flagged in some way and the rest of the import continue? (Thats what I'd like)

Yup—'m working on it now—you'll know when it can't find something. You get three libraries to try. If it can't find it in those, it's "failed."

In addition to the user statistics you publish (on the Zeitgeist page and in the blog) I'd be interested to know how many paying users you have.

I like the idea of sharing book covers; apart from anything else Amazon occasionaly gets it wrong and there's no way to remove just the picture
